ARTIST BRINGS WORK TO COMMUNITY ON A CHOPPER TRICYCLESupport Trike Project to Showcase March 2 - May 1, 2004
Columbia, SC Artist Rob McAdams, has built an adult size custom chopper tricycle, which he rides around urban settings distributing his art. The Support Trike project began March 2 and will run through May 1 with live performances taking place 2-3 times a week throughout the city of Columbia, SC. An audio piece, murals and large paintings on mesh and vinyl will also be installed as elements of the Support Trike project.
Support Trike is a large-scale project that collaborates with local businesses, schools and artists to provide the general public with visual experiences that promote seeing the world with a child-like sense of wonder. McAdams uses accessibility and generosity to encourage an interaction with both the art and artist. Referencing 8mm home movies, his imagery is an attempt to tap into common childhood experiences and rekindle a curiosity often lost on adults.
"By using commercial and fine art production methods with popular culture influences, I blur the boundaries between low and high art in an endeavor to have my work be more inclusive", says McAdams. "If you see a large man pedaling a chopper tricycle around, do not be afraid to tell him what you think of his creation. He may give you a lithograph, t-shirt, trucker hat, sticker, or 3-D digital print with Support Trike 3-D glasses."
Documentation of the Support Trike project, including a documentary film, will be presented at the SC State Museum, Saturday May 1 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in conjunction with the Congaree Arts Festival.
Rob McAdams was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1969. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Art, Magna Cum Laude, in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and is a Master of Fine Arts candidate (May 2004) at the University of South Carolina. He believes in art for arts sake, generosity and bringing art out of the context of the institutions of galleries, museums and academia. The documentary of the Support Trike project is currently in the production stage. You can learn more by visiting www.supporttrike.com or emailing chingching@supporttrike.com
